and so i went
and saw the sea
which seemed to me
the same.
the same soft-spoken
murmurings,
the gentle mists
rain-like kisses
born of faeries lips
upon my face.

i traced a secret message
in the moistened
silken sands.
then you began to
wade
first to your ankles,
then your knees.
then beckoned me
to join you there
with subtle gesturings.

and so i went
and stood a little
closer to the shore
ignoring almost that the water
felt
like ice
upon my feet
or that
the stones
beneath the surface
pierced my very sole.

i boldly sloughed my fear
and turned to you to
take your hand.
when a giant wave appeared
and swept you off
across the sea.

i turned away
a zombie,
and strode back toward the
moistened sands.
sad that you had gone
a bit confused
i read the secret
message
that myself had
written there.

it said:

"beware the waves
and undertow
or love may
overwhelm."
